Let me start by saying that this was by far the shortest trip I’d ever taken! The best part about it was that it was spur of the moment and I only spent five bucks. Don’t believe me? Well keep reading about how I only spent five hours and five dollars at The Golden Nugget in Lake Charles Louisiana.

It was a normal Tuesday of doing my usual routine at home, until I get a FaceTime call from one of my good friends from high school, Ashlon. I knew something was going on because I only hear from her when she’s not working.

As I answered her call, all I see on my iPhone screen is a big ass smile on her face. She asks me, “Girl, what are you doing tonight and tomorrow?!” I was pretty curious to know what she had planned, especially on random weekdays. So I asked, “what’s up?” She tells me that her cousin booked a loft suite for a few days at The Golden Nugget in Lake Charles. I literally ran seven steps out my room; didn’t want to be too dramatic but the level of excitement was high. For those who may not know, The Golden Nugget is a resort that consists of a casino, pool, restaurants, bars, helicopter pad, and more. It originated in Las Vegas and eventually branched out to other cities like Lake Charles Louisiana in 2014. Most people I know go for the casino and to just have a good time. I’d drive past it whenever I would travel to New Orleans but I never experienced it for myself.

My immediate reaction was to drop everything and go-that is until Ashlon told me that she was leaving in one hour. It was crunch time and my mind was racing all over the place. Being the over thinker that I am, I thought about the decision to go, over and over again. I kept contemplating whether or not it was irresponsible and unnecessary for me to just leave out of nowhere. Ultimately, I couldn’t make up my mind in less than an hour so I told Ashlon to leave without me.

Fast forward to later that night, I started regretting my decision to stay home; and Ashlon’s snapchat stories weren’t making it any better! I’d come to the conclusion that I’m a young woman with no husband or children to attend to, no boss to answer to, and blogs about traveling and life experiences. What the HELL was I thinking?! God must have been on my side that night because something unexpected happened.

It was a quarter after 10:00 PM and I get a phone call from another one of my good friends from high school, Tanisha. She asks me, “Girl, what yall doing?” I can tell she was bummed about not being in Lake Charles cause I could hear the sadness in her voice. Thinking of how dumb I was for not going earlier, I answered dryly, “I’m at home doing nothing.” Tanisha immediately started grilling me saying I was crazy for not going. Ashlon also invited her earlier that day but she had to pass because of work. Miraculously, they ended up giving her the night off. We talked for a good five minutes about wanting to be in Lake Charles until she came out and said, “Let’s just go!” Although it was late and Lake Charles is a two and a half hour drive from Houston, I wasn’t about to pass up on another opportunity to go.

I rushed to pack an overnight bag and headed straight over to meet up with Tanisha and we were on the road by 11:00 PM. It was a struggle to stay awake but our excitement kept our eyes from shutting. We arrived at The Golden Nugget at approximately 1:40 AM and met up with Ashlon and her five cousins. We walked to the suite, which was grand! It was a two-story loft that had a spacious living area, bedroom, kitchenette, Jacuzzi, and more.

The night was very entertaining from all the drinking, gambling on the slot machines which explains me spending five bucks, Ashlon’s cousins free-styling in the living room, and a random couple in their thirties or forties from New York came in to party with us, which I thought was the highlight of the night. All of these shenanigans went on until dawn. We had a great time and I was exhausted, but there was one issue, there were way too many people in the suite. Come to find out, some of the cousins invited their friends and they brought their friends and so on. Sleeping arrangements went out the window so me, Tanisha, Ashlon, and two of the cousins decided to head back to Houston.

After writing this piece, I notice how frequent the number five was throughout this story. We were back on the road around 6:45 AM, which sums up to about five hours we spent at The Golden Nugget in Lake Charles. We also spent five hours total on the road there and back. I played five dollars on a slot machine (I didn’t win anything by the way). Even Ashlon invited me out to Lake Charles to hang with her and her five cousins. So since the number five is so prevalent throughout this post, I have five things I have to say about this getaway:

Thank God for keeping us safe on the road cause we were tired.Shout out to that random couple that came in the suite to hangout…you guys were hilarious!Next time I come back I’m trying out the pool and ride in the helicopter. This was one of the most unexpected and spontaneous things I’d ever done.Overall, good experience that I’ll cherish.
